Meet Our Resident Animals

The Big Dogs

Oscar (our newest resident)
Oscar was found on the streets of Santa Fe, old and scared, with obvious injuries. At The Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society the vet was able to salvage half of his jaw that is now "floating". In spite of his disability Oscar is taking each day in stride trying to figure out how to pick up soft food, chew, and swallow. He is a real cuddler and has already found his bed next to Nautica on the futon.

Roxy
Fifteen-year-old Roxy arrived at Kindred Spirits in mid-January and is fitting in nicely! She is getting comfortable with her new friends, both dogs and humans. Although she suffers from severe arthritis, after just a few days of personalized wellness care and TLC, she is smiling and her tail is wagging. She has learned to use the doggie door, and now walks to the barn. And, she just loves her warm coat (like a foam insulated sleeping bag)! You can learn more about Roxy and see additional photos here.

AnnaLisa
our 14-year-old cowgirl, has been at KSAS for four years now. When she arrived, she was shy and afraid of both people and other dogs. Now somewhat greyer and walking slowly with arthritis, she is much more confident and content. She loves soft and pretty pillows.

Ralphie
Ralphie came to KSAS at age 13, three years ago. He arrived with his best friend, Junior. The two had always been together and were very devoted to each other. Ralphie has been having a hard time knowing what to do after Junior passed over the Rainbow Bridge last July at age 18. Ralphie has an old hip injury and gets medication for chronic pain. He loves to go to the barn and keep an eye on the horses and to cuddle with the volunteers.

Gracie
Gracie is estimated to be 14-years-old, and suffers from severe arthritis and years of neglect. When she arrived at the Sanctuary, she was unable to get up and cried a lot. With pain medication, good nutrition and feeling safe and cared for, she is now going to investigate at the barn all morning. She is adjusting into the community well and very happy to be here!

Eskaya
All we know about Eskaya is that she is 15 and that she is a reincarnated Egyptian princess, who has graced our Sanctuary with her stay. She feels at home in the desert and on the couch. She loves the sun, and she is most gentle and gracious in everything she does.

Lila Rose
Estimated to be age 14, and mostly blind, Lila Rose arrived at Kindred Spirits two years ago, emaciated and so traumatized that she hid out of sight in the hay barn for six months. With good nutrition and medication and lots of love, she has since learned to trust people she knows. She will quickly go hide if strangers come visit. She loves her very own soft bed and to be safe and comfy inside at night.

Jackie Love
is just that—a total love! Ten-years-old and blind, she was considered “not adoptable” at the big city shelter. She will continue on eye medication for the rest of her life and is learning to wear eye “doggles” to protect her limited vision from UV rays. She is well adjusted and loves to go for walks with volunteers. She is available for adoption to that special forever home. If your home may be the one for her, please call the Sanctuary and come meet her!

The Small Dogs

Sammy
Now estimated to be 17-years-old, Sammy was thrown in the streets six years ago because he was old. No one came to the shelter to adopt this sweet little old boy and he was scheduled for euthanasia when a place opened up at Kindred Spirits. He is the dearest soul, and goes everywhere with Ulla. He is now mostly deaf and has poor vision, but loves to ride in the car and go to the barn with the big dogs.

Juliana
She came to KSAS two years ago, and is now estimated to be 12-years-old. She arrived in very frail condition, a “throwaway mom” from a puppy mill. Her front feet are permanently crippled and she was unable to walk. Too many pregnancies and no exercise leached the calcium out of her bones. With good pain medication and special nutrition, she now enjoys being able to walk a little bit. She loves to cuddle with Elwood, her special friend.

Gretchen
Now 14, she is mostly blind, but still goes to the Barkin’ Ball. Her guardian died and left her without provisions for her care. Gretchen was placed with several foster homes before a space opened up at Kindred Spirits. She loves to burrow into soft pillows to be warm and cuddle.

Lil' Bit Buddha
Now 16, he got his name when he told three different people who he is! Before he came to Kindred Spirits two years ago, he was abandoned in an apartment. He barely survived. With trachea problems and no teeth, he is frail, but in good spirits. In true Buddha nature, he is self-contained, but also loves to cuddle and to roll on his favorite couch.

Pancake
She is a very senior beagle, now estimated to be 16, who came to Kindred Spirits after her guardian died and left no provisions for her. She was first very frightened and anxious with terrible allergies. She has since found comfort in our daily routines and very much enjoys nutritious, tasty meals! She has many tumors along with her other skin problems. She loves her Charlie Bear treats and to snuggle in her favorite chair.

Abuelito
arrived a year ago, frightened and depressed, after being abandoned, and probably abused by his people. He has no front teeth, leaving his tongue hanging out. He is now a happy old boy who loves to snuggle with his favorite volunteer, Rich, and his roommate, Archie.

Archie
came from a shelter where he was sharing a kennel with Abuelito. They were each other’s only friend, so we took them both! It would have been an additional trauma to separate them. Affectionately known as the “Angel Brothers,” they are still roommates and Abuelito is often helping Archie find things, since Archie only has one eye.

The Blues Brothers – Elwood and his brother Jake
were taken to the Albuquerque City Shelter when their guardian died. Both seniors with severe gum disease, arthritis and heart problems, they were considered unadoptable. Their future looked bleak until a private adoption group found them a space at KSAS. They are about 15-years-old, very affectionate and love to cuddle together and with volunteers.

The Horses

Bo & Loki

Bo – A black thoroughbred gelding, Bo is Loki’s best friend and protector. Bo also has Cushing’s Disease, and benefits from high quality grain, hay, medication and supplements to strengthen his joints and immune system. Like Loki, Bo is 30-years-old, quite an advanced age for a horse!

Loki – A longtime Sanctuary resident, Loki is a beautiful, 30-year-old Appaloosa gelding. He has lived at Kindred Spirits with his best friend, Bo, for many years. Loki has advanced Cushing’s Disease, but is holding his own with the help of good nutrition, special medication, and loving care

Taj
A handsome 28-year-old golden Palomino, Taj was rescued from the meat market auction by a caring friend of the Sanctuary. Since coming to Kindred Spirits in 2009, the formerly abused ranch horse has gained substantial weight and vitality. Taj loves the good food he receives at the Sanctuary and is very happy with his new winter blanket.
